Doing Hardware Dev on Mac OSX
Most of the hardware world is stuck in Windows-ville. Fortunately a few apps are out there to help us Mac-heads make things without resorting to VirtualPC every day! Here are some of my notes about what I've found.
Applications
> PCB Design
Osmond PCB is a great program for doing PCB design, and it is FREE. It is fairly full-featured and pretty robust. It has Gerber exporting, and comes with a bunch of part libraries. It's quite easy to design new parts and copy parts from one design to another. The author has written a great tutorial and reference, and there is a new Yahoo group for users. I highly recommend it!
> Gerber Viewing
I'm still looking for a good Gerber viewer for OSX. I found an online app that transforms Gerbers to SVG files (near the bottom of the page), but that isn't excatly what I want. Joseph Chavez, the author of Osmond PCB, also has a gerber2pdf python script that works well. The only problem is that you can't look at multiple files in one pdf.
